These beef tostadas are renowned for their incredible depth of flavor, yet they remain wonderfully straightforward to prepare. The heart of this recipe lies in its versatility. While you can certainly elevate your meal by making these instant pot refried beans from scratch, smothering your crispy tostadas with their rich, homemade goodness, there’s absolutely no shame in reaching for a can of quality store-bought refried beans. We understand that life gets busy, and sometimes convenience is key. Whether you opt for homemade or store-bought, the result will still be a wonderfully delicious and satisfying meal.

For those who prefer a lighter touch or simply aren’t keen on beans, feel free to skip the refried beans altogether! The seasoned ground beef alone makes a fantastic base for these crunchy tortillas. As you can see from our photos, we love to pile our tostadas high with a colorful array of fresh toppings. This typically includes crisp shredded lettuce, juicy diced tomatoes, a generous sprinkle of shredded Mexican blend cheese, and a dollop of cooling sour cream or authentic crema Mexicana. The combination of textures and flavors is what truly makes this dish irresistible.

What Are Tostadas?

Tostadas are a beloved staple in Mexican cuisine, essentially translating to “toasted” or “crispy.” At their core, they are flat, crispy corn tortillas, traditionally deep-fried until golden and crunchy, though they can also be baked or air-fried for a lighter alternative. These sturdy, savory discs serve as the perfect edible canvas for a variety of toppings. They are typically loaded with a layer of refried beans, a flavorful protein like seasoned beef, chicken, or pork, and then crowned with fresh ingredients such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, crumbled cheese, avocado, and a drizzle of salsa or crema. Tostadas are truly meant to be a delightful, albeit sometimes messy, culinary adventure – a testament to delicious, handheld Mexican comfort food.

Why This Beef Tostadas Recipe Is a Must-Try

There are countless reasons why these beef tostadas will become a regular in your meal rotation. First and foremost, they are incredibly flavorful. The ground beef is seasoned with a robust blend of spices, creating a savory depth that perfectly complements the creamy beans and fresh toppings. This isn’t just a simple weeknight meal; it’s a taste sensation.

Secondly, this recipe is a masterclass in simplicity and speed. With a prep time of just 15 minutes and a cook time of 25 minutes, you can have a full, satisfying meal on the table in under an hour. It’s perfect for those busy evenings when you crave something homemade and delicious but are short on time. We’ve streamlined the process to ensure maximum flavor with minimal effort.

Finally, the versatility of beef tostadas is unmatched. They are highly customizable, allowing each person to build their ideal tostada with their preferred toppings and spice levels. This makes them an excellent option for family dinners, where everyone can get involved in the assembly, or for entertaining guests who appreciate a personalized dining experience.

Customization Options for Your Tostadas

Can I Make This Vegetarian?

Absolutely! This recipe is incredibly adaptable for vegetarian diets. Simply omit the ground beef, and you’ll still have a delicious and flavorful meal packed with protein from the refried beans. To make it even heartier, consider adding seasoned black beans, sautéed mushrooms, crumbled plant-based ground “meat” substitutes, or even roasted sweet potatoes. You can also bulk it up with corn salsa or a colorful mix of bell peppers and onions. The rich spices and fresh toppings ensure a satisfying vegetarian experience.

Can I Add Guacamole?

Of course! Guacamole or freshly sliced avocado makes a fantastic addition to these tostadas. The creamy texture and rich, healthy fats of avocado add another layer of indulgence and flavor that beautifully complements the savory beef and crisp shell. It also provides a wonderful cooling contrast, especially if you enjoy a bit of spice. Don’t hesitate to pile it on for an extra special treat.

Can I Omit The Green Chilies or Adjust the Spice?

Yes, tailoring the spice level to your preference is easy. If you’re not a fan of spicy food, simply omit the chili powder and green chilies from the beef mixture. The other spices will still provide plenty of flavor. However, if you do enjoy some heat, feel free to add extra chopped green chilies, a pinch of cayenne pepper, or even some finely diced jalapeños to the beef. For an extra kick, a drizzle of your favorite spicy hot sauce just before serving will do the trick.

Additional Topping Ideas

Beyond the classic lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream, there are many other toppings that can elevate your beef tostadas:

  • Pico de Gallo: A fresh salsa made with chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and jalapeños.
  • Corn Salsa: A sweet and savory mix of corn, red onion, bell peppers, and cilantro.
  • Pickled Onions: Add a tangy, bright crunch.
  • Cotija Cheese: A salty, crumbly Mexican cheese that adds a distinct flavor.
  • Cilantro: Fresh chopped cilantro for an herbaceous finish.
  • Hot Sauce: Your favorite brand for an extra kick.
  • Radishes: Thinly sliced radishes provide a peppery bite and crisp texture.
  • Black Olives: Sliced black olives add a mild, briny note.

Storage and Meal Prep Tips

When it comes to tostadas, immediate enjoyment is key for the best experience. Unfortunately, we generally don’t recommend assembling these beef tostadas ahead of time because the crispy tostada shells will inevitably get soggy from the moisture of the beans and toppings. The magic of a tostada is its satisfying crunch!

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a head start on your meal prep. You can certainly cook the seasoned ground beef mixture and prepare all of your desired fixings (chopping lettuce, dicing tomatoes, shredding cheese, etc.) in advance. Store each component separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to eat, simply reheat the beef and refried beans, then assemble your tostadas just before serving. This approach allows you to enjoy freshly made, perfectly crispy tostadas without all the last-minute fuss.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (we recommend 80/20 for flavor)
  • 1 small onion, diced (yellow or white)

  • 2 green chilies , chopped (such as Anaheim or poblano, or canned mild green chilies)
  • 1 tsp granulated garlic
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp oregano (Mexican oregano preferred)
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder, optional (for a little extra kick)
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive oil)
  • 4 tostadas (store-bought or homemade crispy corn tortillas)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a large skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add the diced onions and chopped green chilies, and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and become translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 20 seconds, or just until it becomes fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook until it is completely browned, about 5-7 minutes. Once browned, drain any excess fat if necessary. Then, stir in the cumin, granulated garlic, onion powder, chili powder (if using), oregano, and tomato sauce. Mix well to ensure the beef is evenly coated with the spices. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the beef mixture simmer, uncovered, for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and deepen. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed, adding more salt, pepper, or spices if desired.
  • To assemble your delicious tostadas, spread about 1/4 cup of warmed refried beans evenly over each crispy tostada shell. Next, spoon 3-4 tablespoons of the seasoned beef mixture on top of the beans. Finally, generously top with all your favorite fixings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, and a dollop of sour cream. Serve immediately with lime wedges and hot sauce for an authentic and satisfying meal!

Notes

If you don’t have store-bought tostadas on hand, you can easily make your own! Simply fry corn tortillas in oil until crisp, or bake them in a preheated oven (400°F/200°C) for 8-10 minutes until golden and crunchy. Alternatively, you can use soft tortillas for a taco-style meal or even tortilla chips for a nacho-like experience.

Don’t feel like making refried beans from scratch? No problem! Purchase some good quality canned refried beans at your local supermarket. Make sure to warm them gently on the stovetop or in the microwave before spreading them on the tostadas – this makes them smoother and enhances their flavor.

For an even richer flavor in your ground beef, consider using a combination of ground beef and ground chorizo. This adds a fantastic smoky and spicy dimension.
