Why You’ll Love These Air Fryer Fruity Pebble Donuts

Lately, you’ve been showing so much love for all the air fryer recipes I’ve been sharing, like the incredibly popular air fryer steak. So, it only felt right to bring you an air fryer dessert that’s equally as impressive and easy. These air-fried donuts truly exceeded expectations! They are incredibly simple to prepare, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. Here’s why these donuts will become your new favorite:

  • Super Quick & Easy: From start to finish, you’re looking at less than 20 minutes. Perfect for when cravings strike!
  • No Deep Frying Mess: Say goodbye to splattering oil and heavy cleanup. The air fryer delivers a wonderfully crispy exterior without the fuss.
  • Kid-Friendly & Fun: The colorful Fruity Pebbles instantly make these donuts irresistible for children, and let’s be honest, adults too!
  • Perfect Texture: They’re sweet, delightfully crispy on the outside, and wonderfully soft and fluffy on the inside.
  • Versatile Treat: Ideal for breakfast, a snack, or even a unique dessert to impress guests at your next gathering.

The secret to these scrumptious bites of heaven lies in the perfectly balanced glaze and the satisfying crunch of the cereal topping. Once you try them, you’ll understand why they’re so addictive!

Ingredients You’ll Need

One of the best things about this recipe is its simplicity, relying on readily available ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

  • Canned Biscuits: The ultimate shortcut for quick donuts! I highly recommend using Pillsbury Hawaiian grands for a hint of sweetness and a larger donut base, but any large canned biscuit dough will work beautifully.
  • Whole Milk: Forms the smooth, rich base of our delicious donut glaze.
  • Fruity Pebbles: The star of the show! These colorful, crunchy cereal flakes add a unique texture and flavor. Don’t be afraid to experiment – you can easily swap them for Cocoa Pebbles for a chocolatey twist, or even your other favorite cereals.
  • Granulated Sugar: Used for coating the donuts before air frying, providing an extra layer of sweetness and a delightful crunch.
  • Powdered Sugar (Confectioners’ Sugar): Essential for creating that silky-smooth, sweet glaze that perfectly complements the donut.
  • Butter: Melted butter helps the granulated sugar adhere to the donuts and contributes to their golden-brown finish and rich flavor.
  • Orange Juice: A splash of orange juice in the glaze adds a subtle tang that brightens up the overall flavor, cutting through the sweetness and adding a lovely citrus note.

How to Make Air Fryer Fruity Pebble Donuts

Follow these simple steps to create your own batch of irresistible air fryer donuts:

  1. Prepare the Dough: Carefully remove the biscuit dough from the can. On a lightly floured surface, separate each biscuit. Using a rolling pin, gently roll each biscuit out to about ½-inch thickness. This ensures a good, substantial donut. Next, use a ½-inch biscuit or cookie cutter to remove the center of each biscuit, creating the classic donut shape. Don’t discard the donut holes – they make for delicious little bite-sized treats!
  2. Coat with Butter and Sugar: In a small, shallow bowl, melt the butter. Dip each donut (and the donut holes!) into the melted butter, allowing any excess to drip off. In a separate bowl, pour the granulated sugar. Lightly toss the butter-dipped donuts in the sugar until evenly coated. This step is crucial for that lovely sugary crust.
  3. Air Fry to Perfection: Preheat your air fryer to 360 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 180 degrees Celsius) for about 5 minutes. While it preheats, lightly spray the air fryer basket with a nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Carefully place the prepared donuts into the air fryer basket, ensuring there’s about ½-inch of space between each one to allow for even cooking and air circulation. Cook for 5 minutes, then carefully flip each donut over and cook for an additional 3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Repeat in batches if necessary, depending on the size of your air fryer.
  4. Whip Up the Glaze: While your donuts are air frying, it’s time to prepare the delectable glaze. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the whole milk, orange juice, and powdered sugar until completely smooth and free of lumps. The consistency should be pourable but thick enough to cling to the donuts. If it’s too thick, add a tiny bit more milk; if too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.
  5. Glaze and Decorate: Once the donuts are cooked and slightly cooled (but still warm is best for the glaze to set nicely), remove them from the air fryer. One at a time, dip the top of each donut into the prepared frosting. Immediately after glazing, sprinkle generously with Fruity Pebbles cereal. The warmth of the donut helps the glaze set and the cereal adhere. Repeat this process with all remaining donuts and donut holes.

And just like that, you have a batch of incredible, homemade air fryer fruity pebble donuts ready to be devoured! Enjoy them fresh for the best experience.

Equipment You’ll Need

The star of this recipe is undoubtedly the air fryer, which makes achieving perfectly cooked donuts incredibly easy and mess-free. Beyond that, you’ll just need a few basic kitchen tools:

  • Air Fryer:

A good quality air fryer is essential for this recipe. Different models may have slightly varying cooking times, so keep an eye on your donuts during the last few minutes.

  • Rolling Pin: For flattening the biscuit dough to an even thickness.
  • Biscuit or Cookie Cutter: A ½-inch cutter is ideal for creating the donut holes. If you don’t have one, a clean plastic bottle cap or a medicine cup can work in a pinch!
  • Small Bowls: For melting butter, holding granulated sugar, and mixing the glaze.
  • Whisk: To ensure a smooth, lump-free glaze.
  • Tongs or Spatula: For handling the hot donuts in and out of the air fryer.
  • Wire Cooling Rack: Great for allowing excess glaze to drip off and for the donuts to cool slightly before serving.

Do I Need an Air Fryer? (Alternatives to Air Frying)

While the air fryer is fantastic for this recipe, you absolutely do not need one to make delicious homemade donuts! You can certainly bake these instead, and they will turn out just as tasty, albeit with a slightly different texture.

To bake them in a traditional oven: Prepare the donuts as instructed (rolling, cutting, buttering, and sugaring). Then, simply follow the baking instructions on the back of your canned biscuit package. Generally, this means baking at around 375-400°F (190-200°C) for 8-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Keep a close eye on them, as oven temperatures can vary. Once baked, let them cool slightly and then proceed with glazing and decorating with Fruity Pebbles as described in the recipe.

Recipe Variations and Customizations

This recipe is incredibly flexible, allowing for endless customization to suit your taste or whatever you have on hand. Feel free to unleash your creativity!

  • Cereal Swaps: As mentioned, Cocoa Pebbles are a fantastic alternative for a chocolatey flavor. Other cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch (crushed), Captain Crunch, or even plain cornflakes (crushed and mixed with cinnamon sugar) would be delicious.
  • Sprinkle Fun: If you don’t have cereal, or just want extra color, use your favorite sprinkles! Rainbow sprinkles are always a hit.
  • Different Glazes: Instead of the orange juice glaze, try a simple vanilla glaze (powdered sugar + milk + vanilla extract), a chocolate glaze (powdered sugar + cocoa powder + milk), or even a cream cheese glaze.
  • Extracts: Add a few drops of almond, lemon, or even maple extract to your glaze for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Stuffed Donuts: For an extra special treat, before rolling and cutting, you could potentially add a small dollop of Nutella or jam in the center of the biscuit, then seal it before cooking. This would be more like a donut ball, but still delicious!
  • Add-ins: Mix finely chopped nuts, shredded coconut, or mini chocolate chips into the glaze before dipping for more texture.

Tips for Success

To ensure your Air Fryer Fruity Pebble Donuts turn out perfectly every time, keep these helpful tips in mind:

  • Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: Cook the donuts in batches to ensure proper air circulation. Overcrowding will lead to uneven cooking and less crispy donuts.
  • Even Dough Thickness: Rolling the biscuits to an even ½-inch thickness is important for consistent cooking. Thinner areas might burn, while thicker areas might not cook through.
  • Generous Butter Dip: Don’t skimp on the melted butter. It helps the sugar stick and gives the donuts a beautiful golden crust.
  • Hot Glaze, Cold Cereal: Glazing the donuts while they are still warm (but not piping hot) allows the glaze to melt slightly and adhere beautifully. Apply the Fruity Pebbles immediately after dipping before the glaze sets.
  • Donut Holes are Gold: Don’t forget to cook the donut holes! They are fantastic little bonus treats. Adjust their cooking time as they will cook faster than the full-sized donuts, usually around 3-5 minutes total.
  • Check for Doneness: Air fryer models vary. Always do a quick visual check during cooking to ensure your donuts aren’t burning and are cooked through. They should be golden brown.

Serving Suggestions

These delightful donuts are versatile enough to be enjoyed in many ways:

  • Classic Breakfast: Pair them with a hot cup of coffee, tea, or a tall glass of cold milk.
  • Brunch Star: Serve them as part of a larger brunch spread alongside eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit.
  • Party Treat: Arrange them on a platter for birthday parties, potlucks, or any casual get-together. They are always a conversation starter!
  • Dessert: A lighter alternative to heavy desserts, these make a satisfying sweet ending to any meal.

Storage and Reheating

These donuts are best enjoyed fresh, but if you happen to have any leftovers, here’s how to store them:

Place the donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. To keep the cereal from getting soggy, it’s best to store them in a single layer if possible, or separate layers with parchment paper.

To refresh them, you can pop them back in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes at 300°F (150°C) or in a microwave for a few seconds. Be mindful that reheating might make the cereal a little less crispy, but the donut itself will still be delicious.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 1 can Pillsbury biscuits, Hawaiian bread grands (or any large canned biscuits)

Instructions

  • Remove biscuit dough from the can and separate the biscuits on a lightly floured surface. Use a rolling pin to roll the biscuits to ½” thickness. Use a ½” biscuit/cookie cutter and remove the center of the biscuits to create the donut shape.
  • In a small bowl, melt the butter. Dip each donut (and donut holes!) into the butter and allow excess to drip off. Add granulated sugar to a second bowl and lightly toss the buttered donuts to coat evenly in the sugar mix.
  • Preheat the air fryer at 360 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 5 minutes. Lightly spray the basket with nonstick spray and place donuts into the basket in a single layer. Keep ½” space between the donuts to ensure even cooking. Cook for 5 minutes, carefully turn them over, and cook for an additional 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Repeat with remaining donuts.
  • While the donuts are cooking, prepare the frosting. In a small mixing bowl, whisk whole milk, orange juice, and powdered sugar until completely smooth.
  • Remove donuts from the air fryer. While still warm, dip the top of each donut into the frosting, one at a time. Immediately sprinkle with Fruity Pebbles cereal. Repeat with all donuts and donut holes, then serve and enjoy!

Notes

If a biscuit/cookie cutter is not available, a plastic bottle cap or medicine cup can do the job in a bind to create the donut holes.
