  • Perfectly Balanced: The ideal combination of sweet, savory, and a touch of tang makes these wings incredibly addictive and satisfying.
  • No Extra Dipping Sauce Needed: The honey BBQ sauce is so flavorful and abundant, these wings truly don’t require any additional dipping, though you can always add some if you wish!
  • Versatile for Any Occasion: From casual weeknight dinners to festive gatherings, these wings are versatile enough to fit any menu.

Key Ingredients for Flavorful Air Fryer Wings

Crafting the perfect honey BBQ wings starts with selecting the right ingredients. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need and some tips for the best results:

  • Chicken Wings: I highly recommend using small, skin-on, bone-in chicken wings. Smaller wings tend to cook more evenly and develop a crispier texture. If your wings come whole, you can easily cut them into flats and drumettes at the joint. If using larger wings, be sure to adjust your cooking time accordingly to ensure they cook through and get perfectly crispy. Patting them thoroughly dry with paper towels before seasoning is crucial for maximum crispiness!
  • BBQ Sauce: Your choice of BBQ sauce can significantly influence the final flavor. Feel free to use your favorite brand! I personally love Sweet Baby Ray’s Original Barbecue Sauce for its classic sweet and smoky profile, but a spicier or tangier variety would also work wonderfully if that’s your preference.
  • Spices: A simple yet effective blend of paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt forms the base of our seasoning. Paprika adds a lovely color and subtle earthiness, while garlic and onion powder provide a foundational savory depth. Don’t hesitate to customize this blend! For an extra kick, consider adding chipotle powder for smoky heat or Cajun seasoning for a bold, zesty flavor.
  • Honey: The star of our sweet and tangy glaze! Honey provides natural sweetness and helps create that beautiful, irresistible caramelization on the wings.
  • Olive Oil: A drizzle of olive oil helps the spices adhere to the chicken and contributes to a beautiful golden-brown and crispy skin.
  • Cooking Spray: Essential for preventing sticking and ensuring even cooking in the air fryer basket.
All the simple ingredients you need for these delicious wings!

Easy Step-By-Step Instructions for Air Frying Wings

Making these crispy honey BBQ wings is surprisingly straightforward. Follow these steps for perfect results every time:

  1. Preheat Your Air Fryer: Begin by preheating your air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). While it’s preheating, lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent the wings from sticking. This step ensures an immediate crisping effect when the wings are added.
  2. Prepare the Spice Blend: In a small bowl, combine the paprika, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix them well until uniformly blended. This dry rub will infuse your chicken with savory flavors before the sauce is even applied.
  3. Season the Chicken: Thoroughly pat dry the chicken wings with paper towels. This is a crucial step for achieving maximum crispiness. Drizzle the wings with olive oil, then generously sprinkle them with the prepared spice mixture. Toss the wings well to ensure they are evenly coated.
  4. Arrange in Air Fryer: Arrange the seasoned chicken wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket, skin side up. It’s important not to overcrowd the basket. If necessary, cook the wings in batches to allow proper air circulation, which is key for even cooking and crispiness.
  5. Initial Cook & Sauce Prep: Cook the wings for 15 minutes. While they are cooking, prepare your honey BBQ sauce by combining the BBQ sauce and honey in a separate bowl. Stir well to mix. Taste the sauce and adjust to your liking – if it’s too sweet, add a little more BBQ sauce; if you prefer more sweetness, add a touch more honey.
  6. Coat with Sauce: Once the initial 15 minutes are up, carefully remove the chicken wings from the air fryer and transfer them to a large bowl. Pour the prepared honey BBQ sauce over the wings and toss them gently until each wing is thoroughly coated with the delicious, sticky sauce.
  7. Final Cook & Serve: Return the sauced chicken wings to the air fryer basket. Cook for an additional 3-6 minutes, or until the sauce is beautifully caramelized and sticky, and the wings have reached your desired level of crispiness. Keep a close eye on them during this stage, as honey can burn quickly. Once done, remove from the air fryer, let them cool for a few minutes (the sauce will be very hot!), and then enjoy your perfectly crispy and flavorful Air Fryer Honey BBQ Wings!
Ensure wings are in a single layer for optimal crispiness!

Expert Tips for the Best Air Fryer Honey BBQ Wings

Achieving restaurant-quality wings at home is easier than you think with these expert tips:

  • Timing is Everything for the Sauce: Resist the urge to coat raw chicken wings with honey BBQ sauce at the beginning. Honey contains sugars that burn extremely quickly under high heat, leading to a burnt sauce rather than a caramelized one. Always add the honey-based sauce towards the end of the cooking process, after the wings have had a chance to crisp up.
  • Spice It Up: If you enjoy a bit of heat, easily add a few splashes of sriracha sauce, a pinch of cayenne pepper, or a dash of your favorite hot sauce to the honey BBQ mixture. This will give your wings a delightful spicy kick that perfectly complements the sweetness.
  • Serving Suggestions: While these wings are fantastic on their own, don’t hesitate to serve them with your favorite dipping sauces for an added layer of flavor. Classic choices like ranch dressing, creamy blue cheese dip, or a zesty Spicy Aioli would be excellent accompaniments.
  • Sauce Alternatives: No BBQ sauce or honey on hand? No problem! You can easily substitute the honey BBQ sauce with a honey mustard sauce for a different but equally delicious flavor profile. Teriyaki sauce or a spicy gochujang glaze are also great options for variation.
  • Batch Cooking for a Crowd: This recipe yields a small batch, perfect for a quick snack or a small family. If you’re feeding a larger crowd for game day or a party, feel free to double or even triple the recipe. Remember to cook in batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket, which is essential for uniform crispiness.
  • Don’t Skip Patting Dry: This step cannot be emphasized enough. Excess moisture on the chicken skin prevents it from getting truly crispy. Use plenty of paper towels to ensure the wings are as dry as possible before seasoning.
  • Check for Doneness: For food safety and optimal texture, chicken wings should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Use a meat thermometer to check the thickest part of the wing.
  • For Extra Crispy Skin: Some enthusiasts swear by adding a small amount of baking powder (about ½ teaspoon per pound of wings) to the dry rub. The baking powder helps to break down the chicken skin, leading to an even crispier exterior. Make sure to use baking powder, not baking soda!
Perfectly glazed and ready to serve!

Storing and Reheating Your Honey BBQ Wings

Leftover honey BBQ wings are a rare treat, but if you happen to have some, here’s how to store and reheat them to maintain their deliciousness:

Place any cooled leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply place them back in the air fryer at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 5-7 minutes, or until thoroughly heated through and crisp again. This method will bring back much of their original crispiness without making them dry.

  • Pat dry the chicken wings with a paper towel and drizzle with olive oil. Season the chicken wings with the spice mixture.
  • Lay the chicken wings skin side up, in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Make sure not to overcrowd the basket.
  • Cook for 15 minutes. While the chicken wings cook, combine the honey and bbq sauce. Taste it and adjust if needed. If it’s too sweet for your liking, add more bbq sauce.
