Why You’ll Love Making (and Eating!) These Nutter Butter Mummies

These spooky treats aren’t just a feast for the eyes; they’re incredibly satisfying to make and devour. Here’s why they’ll quickly become your go-to Halloween recipe:

  • Effortlessly Simple: With only three primary ingredients and no baking required, this recipe is perfect for busy schedules. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can transform simple cookies into festive masterpieces.
  • Kid-Friendly Fun: Little hands love to help, and this recipe offers plenty of opportunities for them to get involved. From dipping cookies (with supervision) to placing candy eyes and drizzling chocolate, it’s a creative activity that yields delicious results.
  • Irresistibly Delicious: The classic combination of crispy, peanut buttery Nutter Butter cookies coated in sweet white chocolate is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. It’s a nostalgic flavor profile that appeals to both children and adults.
  • Perfect for Any Halloween Occasion: Whether it’s a large Halloween bash, a small family gathering, or just a fun afternoon treat, these mummies fit right in. They’re portable, easy to serve, and always bring a smile (or a spooky grin!) to faces.
  • Highly Customizable: While the classic mummy look is fantastic, this recipe provides a great base for your own creative twists. Think colored chocolate, sprinkles, or different cookie bases!

My own nieces and nephews absolutely light up when we make Halloween treats. After crafting those delightful Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin cupcakes, I knew I had to keep the spooky baking (or in this case, no-baking) momentum going. These Nutter Butter Mummies quickly became a new favorite, proving that some of the best holiday treats are often the easiest to create.

The Simple Ingredients You’ll Need for Your Mummies

One of the best aspects of this recipe is its minimal ingredient list. You likely have some of these on hand, and the others are easily found at any grocery store. Quality ingredients will make a difference in taste and appearance, so here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

  • White Chocolate: I typically opt for vanilla-flavored white chocolate baking bars or chips for their rich, creamy texture and ease of melting. However, candy melts are an excellent alternative, especially if you want a wider range of colors or need the chocolate to set more quickly and maintain a smooth finish without much fuss. Look for high-quality brands for the best flavor.
  • Nutter Butter Cookies: These iconic peanut butter sandwich cookies are the star of the show! Their distinctive shape and delicious peanut butter filling make them perfect for transforming into mummies. Important Note: Since Nutter Butter cookies contain peanuts, it’s crucial to be mindful of peanut allergies. If you’re serving these at an event, always advise guests of the peanut content. For an allergy-friendly alternative, consider using a different type of cookie (see “Can I Use Other Cookies?” section below) or a peanut-free cookie alternative if available.
  • Candy Eyes: These edible googly eyes are what truly bring your mummies to life! They add that whimsical, slightly eerie touch that makes these treats so special. You can find them in the baking aisle of most grocery stores, craft stores, or online. If you can’t get your hands on them, don’t fret! You can easily pipe small dots of decorating icing (black or brown for pupils) with a fine tip onto white chocolate circles, or use mini dark chocolate chips for a similar effect.
  • Optional: Dark Chocolate for Drizzle: While the primary decoration comes from the white chocolate bandages, a small amount of melted dark chocolate can be used for extra detailing, like making tiny pupils in the candy eyes or adding a deeper contrast to the mummy’s “rags.”

Essential Tools for Your Mummy-Making Adventure

Gathering your tools before you start will ensure a smooth and enjoyable process. You won’t need anything fancy, just a few basic kitchen items:

  • Baking Sheets: You’ll need two or three, depending on how many cookies you’re making and the size of your sheets.
  • Parchment Paper: Crucial for lining your baking sheets! This prevents the chocolate-dipped cookies from sticking and makes for easy cleanup. Wax paper can also work in a pinch.
  • Microwave-Safe Bowl: For melting your white chocolate. Ensure it’s deep enough to fully submerge a Nutter Butter cookie.
  • Fork or Dipping Tool: A regular dinner fork works perfectly for dipping the cookies and allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Specialized dipping tools are also available if you prefer.
  • Piping Bag (or Zip-Top Bag): Essential for creating the mummy “bandages.” If you don’t have a piping bag, a small zip-top plastic bag with a tiny corner snipped off will do the trick.
  • Small Scissors: For snipping the tip of your piping bag. Precision here is key for fine mummy bandages.
  • Spatula or Spoon: For stirring the melting chocolate.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Spooky Nutter Butter Mummies

Making these mummies is a fun and straightforward process. Follow these detailed steps for the best results:

1. Preparation is Key

Before you even think about melting chocolate, prepare your workspace. Line two or three baking sheets with parchment paper. This non-stick surface is vital to prevent your mummies from adhering to the pan as they set. Clear some counter space and have all your ingredients and tools within easy reach.

2. Melting the White Chocolate to Perfection

Transfer your white chocolate (chips or broken pieces of a bar) into a microwave-safe bowl. Start by microwaving it for 30 seconds at a time. After each interval, remove the bowl and give the chocolate a good stir. Even if it doesn’t look fully melted, stirring helps to distribute the heat and prevents scorching. Continue to microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring vigorously after each, until the chocolate is smooth and completely melted. Be careful not to overheat it, as this can cause the chocolate to seize or become grainy and dry.

3. The Dipping Process

Once your white chocolate is perfectly melted and smooth, it’s time for the magic! One at a time, gently place a Nutter Butter cookie onto a fork (or use a dipping tool if you have one). Submerge the cookie completely into the melted white chocolate, ensuring it’s fully coated. Lift the cookie out and lightly tap the fork against the edge of the bowl. This crucial step helps to remove any excess chocolate, preventing thick, lumpy mummies and ensuring a cleaner finish. Carefully transfer the dipped cookie to your prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1-2 inches between each cookie to prevent them from sticking together as they set.

4. Adding the Eyes

Work quickly! White chocolate sets relatively fast, especially if your kitchen is cool. As soon as you place a dipped cookie on the parchment paper, immediately attach two candy eyes onto the upper third of the cookie. Gently press them into the wet chocolate so they adhere firmly. If the chocolate starts to set before you add the eyes, they won’t stick, so don’t delay this step!

5. Crafting the Mummy Bandages

Once all your cookies are dipped and have their eyes, it’s time to create the iconic mummy bandages. If your melted chocolate has started to harden, simply pop it back into the microwave for 10-15 seconds and stir until smooth again. Pour the melted chocolate into a piping bag (or a sturdy zip-top bag). Twist the top tightly to prevent chocolate from oozing out. Using small scissors, snip the tiniest bit off the very tip of the piping bag. The smaller the snip, the finer your bandages will be. You want a thin stream of chocolate for a realistic mummy effect.

6. Setting and Enjoying

Holding the piping bag firmly, apply gentle pressure and drizzle the white chocolate back and forth across each cookie, creating overlapping lines that resemble mummy bandages. Be creative with your patterns – some lines can be straight, others diagonal, crisscrossing over each other. Remember to avoid covering the candy eyes, letting them peek out from the bandages. Once decorated, allow the mummies to set completely. This can take about 5-10 minutes at room temperature, or you can pop the baking sheets into the refrigerator for a few minutes to speed up the process. Once set, your Nutter Butter Mummies are ready to be devoured!

Pro Tips for Perfect Nutter Butter Mummies Every Time

Achieving perfectly coated and decorated mummies is easy with a few insider tricks. Here are some essential tips to ensure your Halloween treats turn out beautifully:

  • Work Quickly, But Don’t Rush: White chocolate, especially candy melts, sets quite fast. Have all your cookies and candy eyes ready before you start dipping. Dip a few cookies, add the eyes, then move on to the next batch. This ensures the eyes adhere properly before the chocolate hardens.
  • Mastering Chocolate Melting: The key to smooth, dippable chocolate is gentle heating. Always use a microwave-safe bowl and heat in short bursts (30 seconds initially, then 15-second increments). Stir thoroughly after each interval, even if the chocolate doesn’t look fully melted. Residual heat will continue to melt the chocolate as you stir. Overheating will cause the chocolate to seize, become thick, or burn, making it unusable.
  • Achieving a Smooth Consistency: If your white chocolate seems a bit too thick for dipping, you can thin it out. Add a tablespoon of vegetable shortening or 1 teaspoon of coconut oil (not water, which will seize chocolate) to the melted chocolate and stir until smooth. This makes for a thinner, easier-to-work-with coating.
  • Transform into Mummy Pops: Want to make them even more fun for a party? Insert a lollipop stick or a pretzel stick into the cream filling of each Nutter Butter cookie before dipping. Once dipped and decorated, you’ll have delightful mummy pops!
  • Reheating Hardened Chocolate: If your melted chocolate in the bowl starts to harden while you’re working, don’t worry! Just pop it back into the microwave for 10-15 seconds and stir until it’s smooth and dippable again.
  • Double Dip for Extra Coverage (Optional): For a thicker, more opaque white coating, you can allow the first layer to set slightly (or fully), then quickly dip the cookie again. This can create an even more pronounced mummy effect.
  • Chill for Faster Setting: If you’re short on time or your kitchen is warm, place the baking sheets with the decorated mummies into the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes. This will significantly speed up the setting process.

Can I Use Other Cookies for This Recipe?

Yes, absolutely! While Nutter Butter cookies are fantastic for their peanut butter flavor and shape, this recipe is incredibly versatile. You can easily substitute them with other types of cookies to create equally charming mummy treats. Oreo cookies are a popular choice – their dark color provides a striking contrast with the white chocolate, making the mummy effect even more dramatic. Other great options include:

  • Graham Crackers: Break them into squares or rectangles for a different texture.
  • Shortbread Cookies: Their buttery flavor would complement the white chocolate beautifully.
  • Vanilla Wafers: Small and round, they would make adorable mini mummies.
  • Fig Newtons or Similar Filled Cookies: If you want to experiment with different fillings.
  • Gluten-Free Cookies: For those with dietary restrictions, simply choose your favorite gluten-free sandwich cookie or biscuit.

Just remember to choose cookies that are relatively flat and sturdy enough to be dipped without breaking. The key is to have a base that can hold the chocolate coating and candy eyes. Experiment with different varieties to find your favorite mummy base!

Creative Variations and Customizations

Once you’ve mastered the basic Nutter Butter Mummy, the possibilities for customization are endless! Get creative and make these treats truly your own:

  • Colorful Mummies: Use colored candy melts instead of white chocolate. Green mummies, orange mummies, or even purple mummies can add a fun pop of color to your Halloween spread.
  • Spooky Sprinkles: Before the white chocolate sets, sprinkle some Halloween-themed sprinkles (bats, ghosts, pumpkins) over the “bandages” for extra flair.
  • Chocolate Drizzle: Instead of just white chocolate drizzle for bandages, use melted dark chocolate or even colored chocolate for a multi-toned effect. You could also drizzle a different color over the white bandages for a layered look.
  • Edible Glitter: A dusting of edible glitter (silver or gold) can give your mummies a ghostly shimmer.
  • Flavor Extracts: Add a tiny drop of peppermint, almond, or orange extract to your melted white chocolate for an extra layer of flavor. Start with a very small amount and taste as you go!
  • Monster Mummies: Use larger candy eyes or combine different sizes to create unique monster faces. You could even use a small dot of gel food coloring for extra detailing on the eyes.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

These Nutter Butter Mummies are wonderfully convenient because they can be made in advance, making your Halloween party prep a breeze. Proper storage will ensure they stay fresh and delicious:

  • Refrigerator Storage: Once fully set, store your Nutter Butter Mummies in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Layer them with parchment paper between each layer to prevent them from sticking or the chocolate from getting scratched. They will stay fresh and delicious for up to 1-2 weeks in the fridge.
  • Freezer Storage: For longer storage, these mummies freeze beautifully. Again, place them in an airtight container, separated by parchment paper, and freeze for up to 1-2 months. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply take them out of the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature for about 15-30 minutes before serving.
  • Room Temperature: If your home is cool (below 70°F or 21°C) and not too humid, the mummies can be left at room temperature in an airtight container for a few days. However, for optimal freshness and to prevent the chocolate from softening, refrigeration is recommended.
  • Make-Ahead: Since they store so well, you can easily make these Nutter Butter Mummies a few days or even a week before your Halloween event. This takes a lot of stress out of last-minute preparations, allowing you to enjoy the holiday more.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are some common questions you might have when making your Nutter Butter Mummies:

  • Can I use regular chocolate chips instead of white chocolate or candy melts?
Yes, you can. However, regular chocolate chips sometimes need a bit more care when melting to achieve a smooth, dippable consistency. You might need to add a teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening to thin it out slightly. Also, white chocolate tends to provide the best “mummy” aesthetic.
  • What if my chocolate becomes too thick while dipping?
This is common, especially if you’re working in a cooler environment. Simply microwave the bowl of chocolate for another 10-15 seconds and stir well. It should return to a smooth consistency.
  • Are these safe for people with peanut allergies?
No, Nutter Butter cookies contain peanuts. If you are serving individuals with peanut allergies, it is crucial to use a different, peanut-free cookie as your base, such as Oreos or another safe alternative, and ensure all your dipping chocolate and decorations are also peanut-free. Always clearly label your treats if serving to a group.
  • How many mummies does this recipe yield?
The recipe is designed for 30 servings, which typically corresponds to the number of cookies in a standard 16-ounce package of Nutter Butter cookies.
  • Can kids really help with this recipe?
Absolutely! This is a fantastic recipe for kids to help with. They can assist with placing the candy eyes, carefully drizzling the chocolate bandages (with supervision), and even arranging the finished mummies on a platter. It’s a great way to get them involved in holiday prep.

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces nutter butter cookies
  • two 10 ounce bags of white chocolate candy melts
  • 1 package candy eyes
Prevent your screen from going dark

Instructions

  • Line two or three baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.
  • Add the white chocolate to a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Give it a stir and if it’s still not melted, microwave again for 15 seconds. Continue to microwave in 15 second intervals.
  • Place the Nutter Butter cookies on a fork one at a time and dip it into the melted chocolate until fully submerged. Then remove and lightly tap the fork onto the edge of the bowl to remove the excess chocolate.
  • Place onto the baking sheet and space them about 1-2 inches apart. Add the candy eyes before the chocolate sets.
  • Microwave the leftover chocolate and add more chocolate melts if needed. Pour the melted chocolate into a piping bag and twist the top tightly.
  • Using scissors, snip the tip of the piping bag just the teeniest bit. You don’t want to cut off too much otherwise the bandages will be too thick when decorating.
  • Hold the piping bag firmly and give it a squeeze to decorate the cookies to look more like mummies. Make the bandages fun and go in multiple directions, avoiding the eyes.
  • Allow them to set for at least 5 minutes and enjoy!

Notes

  • The white chocolate sets pretty fast so work quickly.
  • When melting the white chocolate, do not overheat as it will dry the chocolate out.
  • Feel free to add a tablespoon of shortening or 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the chocolate to smooth it out.
  • You can turn these into nutter butter mummy pops, just add a stick.
  • If the chocolate in the bowl hardens, just pop it back in the microwave and heat for 15 seconds.
